An Easier Solution to Non-Magnetic MRI Flooring

As the medical industry rapidly evolves, the need to keep pace with current technology becomes increasingly critical. A university in California recently embraced this challenge when renovating one of its medical research facilities, originally constructed in 1952.

Problem

As part of the renovation, two MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) rooms in the research building were completely stripped out and refurbished. MRI room technology has stringent requirements; the materials used alongside the equipment must have non-resonant properties to prevent interference with the MRI machinery. In order to conceal all the cabling and wiring, a raised flooring system is required.

Additionally, older buildings and renovations present their own unique set of challenges, including building regulations compliance, unexpected setbacks, and compact, irregular room configurations, to name a few.

After reviewing the different flooring options for this application, the architect appointed for the renovation chose Fibergrate Composite Structure's Fibergrate GRP non-magnetic MRI raised flooring system.

Solution

Very early on, the architects worked alongside Fibergrate's local sales manager to get the product specified for the project. Following the purchase and delivery, Fibergrate's sales manager continued to provide support and was even able to visit the site during installation to ensure everything proceeded smoothly.

One of the two rooms was particularly narrow, requiring unusually shaped panels. Fortunately, GRP can be easily cut to size with a handsaw on site—accommodating the narrow room dimensions. Fibergrate's GRP MRI flooring system is completely non-magnetic and thermally non-conductive.

The complete installation took less than two weeks. Whilst Fibergrate's raised flooring systems typically require pedestals to be drilled into the floor, in this instance, an epoxy was used to essentially bond the pedestals to the floor.

The architects for this project appreciated Fibergrate's new bevelled edge for the MRI flooring because it closely resembles the appearance of tile, giving the room a contemporary look while maintaining a smooth walking surface.

The quality products and the unmatched service from Fibergrate did not disappoint. The architect was so pleased with the product and process that he went on to use Fibergrate products in different areas throughout this facility.
