Using Dynadeck® GRP for Data Centre Exterior Applications
Fibergrate is best known for providing robust moulded and pultruded GRP grating solutions; however, our data centre clients are also finding the Dynadeck® product line useful in building out or remodelling their exterior and interior infrastructure.
Where Can You Use Dynadeck® around the Data Centre?
This solid surface GRP decking can be deployed in many areas of the data centre where open grating may not be the preferred choice. Here are a few examples of exterior use cases:
Cooling Tower Fan Decks
Dynadeck® is robust and durable for structural applications such as decks. Decking is one of the most popular use cases for this product since it can be easily fabricated to create a deck of any size and is lightweight enough to transport and install with ease.
Access Paths
Whether creating walkways around the perimeter of buildings and outbuildings or providing access to cooling towers or other externally located equipment, Dynadeck® simplifies construction and speeds up completion of walkway projects around the data centre.
Rooftop Walkways
Weather and UV resistant Dynadeck® can be used on rooftop walkways as a safer walking surface to reach key components (if correctly installed on a support structure that prevents wind uplift). We recommend selecting the gritted version of the product for greater slip-resistance.
Visual Barriers
Some of our clients deploy Dynadeck® vertically as fencing at property lines or as enclosures around restricted areas or pieces of equipment. It is not intended to be used as security fencing or ENC fencing, but it does offer visual privacy and a way to manage general access.
Antenna Screens
Dynadeck® is a good application for telecom screens at data centres. GRP is transparent to RF signals, which means antennas can be hidden behind an RFP structure without hampering performance.
Typical Use Case
A large data centre leveraged Dynadeck® for walkway application on both sides of their building exterior with yellow nosing expansion joints. GRP from Fibergrate provided a light-weight solution with the ability to span the width needed for supports to be located at four-foot intervals. UV resistance was also taken into consideration since the area is in direct sunlight. The next step is the design and development of a custom gutter to package with the walkway.
Benefits of using Dynadeck® vs. Other Materials
This interlocking flooring provides a unique combination of easy transportation, installation, durability, and long, low-maintenance life for data centre construction. It is designed to be installed over three times faster than conventional flooring, with sections easily connecting and locking as they slide together.
Surface Options
- Gritted options surface for slip resistance (including recycled aggregate)
- Optional ADA-compliant vented surface (custom option)
- UV-resistant coating for outdoor applications (available for gritted surface only)
"One of the features of Dynadeck that sometimes goes unnoticed is the product's weight by square foot. The panels are super efficient from a weight-to-span perspective, making them easy to move around and install."
Bill Budgell
Vice President - Global Corporate and Product Development at Fibergrate StructuresQuick Tips for Dynadeck® Users
- Type W HoldDown Clips are recommended to secure Dynadeck panels to structural supports in order to hold the panels on the structure and prevent them from moving.
- Dynadeck® can be installed over a number of different surfaces and substrates. For uneven or sloping ground, you may wish to install it on raised/adjustable pedestals to create an even walking surface. Our GRP structural shapes must also be used to support the stiffeners in these pultruded panels.
- Need to move your Dynadeck®? The decking can be disassembled and transported to another location if desired.
If you are looking for a low-maintenance option that is durable through the years, Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) decking simply makes sense.
